Vernon Township Cemeteries

Love Joy Cemetery

Love Joy Cemetery was originally deeded as a cemetery in 1856. It is well-maintained and under the management of the Vernon Township board.  Love Joy Cemetery falls under the responsibility of the office of the township clerk who is primarily responsible for all record keeping and decision making.

On the west front side of the cemetery, there is a large monument which reads: “In memory of the unknown dead who lost their lives in the railroad wreck of the great Wallace Shows, Aug 06, 1903.” Small markers surround the monument with names of E. J., Joe, George, John, Allen, and Thomas, unclaimed bodies from the wreck buried here.

Greenwood Cemetery

Greenwood Cemetery serves as a meaningful and dignified resting place for the community of Vernon Township and the Village of Vernon in Shiawassee County. Community efforts are underway to restore and preserve Greenwood Cemetery’s historic character, including recent contributions such as granite benches and signage donated to its ongoing revitalization — reflecting the township’s commitment to honoring those who came before us.

Greenwood Cemetery is under the management of an association. Records, burials, and information regarding Greenwood should be directed to the sexton.  Vernon Township does not maintain any records related to this cemetery.
